In
learning English, of course we must learn a lot of English vocabularies.
Especially for Elementary School students that learn English in the first step.
As well as according to Mrs. Nova Eka Yulita, an English teacher in Elementary
School. “For Elementary School students, actually the most important thing to
learn Englsih is Vocabulary. Because, it is the basic for learning English,”
said Mrs. Nova. She also said that Vocabulary was the key to learn English. If
we made a mistake in grammar, perhaps listener could still understand. However,
if we did not know word exactly to told about something, it made people
confused. So speaking English fluently meant it needed rich vocabulary. That’s
an overview of the importance of vocabulary from Mrs.Nova.
Then,
how many words are there in English? How many vocabularies that we must learn to enrich our vocabulary?
These are unanswerable, because according to Bauer (1998:13),
“ English keeps
getting new words and probably in excess of 500 per years are deemed worty of
listing in mayor dictionaries. If all possible technical words are included, it
seems likely that the total member of word of English exceeds one million”.
English
vocabulary has a remarkable range, flexibility, and adaptability. English seems
to have more words in its core vocabulary than other language. Perhaps,
learning to know many words more intimately and any new word that we learn in
our study will add our power to think well. Mrs.Nova said, “ The journey of a
thousand miles begins with a single step. So, continue with our study, watch
for new words at all the time. Studying new words everyday will add our
vocabulary collection.”
The
easiest way to extend our vocabulary is by acquiring group of word from new
experience. We can learn in hearing a
radio station or some other new place for the first time. For elementary school
students, Mrs. Nova said that we had to give them the keywords before reading
and listening activities, so we could enrich their vocabulary with those
keywords. Or we could insert words or idioms in some educative games in class,
and made coversation with them. So they could memorize many words, and also
they learnt to uderstand the meaning of word and how the ways to use them.
According
to some language experts, a rich vocabulary is a very valuable skill and an
essential attribute of success in any career. Therefore our vocabulary may play
a huge role in our future career: It may determine whether we get a job, and
may have an impact on our advancement both profesionally and personally. It is
very important to start building vocabulary
as early as we can in order to ensure that we can reach your fullest potential
in our life and career, including social relationships. It is also essential to
continue to develop our vocabulary over the course or our life; after all,
there are millions of words and no one person can ever learn them all.
